What trades are required for a renovation project?

There are a multitude of trades required for internal home renovations, and the list will be dependent on each unique project. Below we offer a summary of the most common trades required for a renovation project.

Builder

Managing and coordinating work on the construction of new builds and extensions. Builders will engage with architects and surveyors to ensure new developments meet regulatory and legal requirements.

Plumbers

Plumbers fit and maintain water systems in homes and buildings, including toilets, baths, showers, sinks, washing machines, dishwashers and water softeners.

Gas Engineer

A gas engineer specialises in systems and appliances that use natural gas, these appliances can include boilers, gas ranges gas fires and more. A gas engineer will be required when ripping out and fitting a new kitchen if gas hob appliances are used or to install new heating systems.

Electrician

Electricians provide energy to light, heat water and power devices. It is vital that electricians are engaged with early on in a project as electrical rework could become timely and costly.

Carpenter

Carpenters and joiners construct, install and repair wooden structures and fittings. There is a multitude of disciplinaries within the field of carpentry, below are just a few;

Carpenters 1st Fix - First fix carpentry is the first phase of two when constructing a new building. This will include carpentry work that is required to get a building to the point of plastering the walls.

Carpenters 2nd Fix - Second fix carpentry comprises of the neater more decorative work after plastering.

Carpenters will become involved in the fitting of new door frames, stud walls and framework, kitchens, staircases, wardrobes, hanging of doors, skirting and architrave and the laying of wooden flooring. Some carpenters specialise in aspects such as roofing.

Plasterers

Plasters apply plaster and cement mixers to walls and ceilings amongst other works. A plaster would become involved to plaster new extensions or make good areas which have been intentionally altered (chasing for new pipes) or damaged.

Tiler

Wall and floor tilers cover walls, floors and other surfaces with tiles, in kitchens, bathrooms, utilities, hallways and more.

Painter & Decorator

Painters and decorators bring everyday spaces to life, they prepare and apply paint, wallpaper and other finishes to surfaces. This trade will usually be one of the last trades to become involved in a renovation project, but should still be engaged with early to ensure preparation work is carried out in a timely manner.
